The 70th Anniversary of Karen Revolution Day was celebrated with the marching guards of honour at KNU Headquarters, Klo Yaw Lay, Karen State on the 31 January 2019.




The celebration symbolised the following (1) political meaning, (2) to bring about national unity, (3) to increase national (4) to show the KNU's political goals such as national unity and self-determination.

The ceremony also aimed to show the importance of the Karen National Union’s political goals including

- gaining guarantee and full opportunity to co-operated building a meaningful federal and democratic country

- obtaining a meaningful political system

- achieving the Karen people's desire

- encouraging the Karen people to be involved in the liberation movement

- building Karen unity

- building Ethnic unity and

- building long-lasting peace in a federal democratic country



The Chairman of the KNU, General Saw Mutu Sae Poe and the Karen National Liberation Army, Senior General Saw Johny delivered speeches during the ceremony.  On behalf of the Ethnic Resistance Organisations, Khine Soe Naing Aung Vice-Chairman of the Arakan Liberation Army gave a speech.

 

The ceremony also bestowed honourable awards to an estimated 1,500 leaders and soldiers who joined the KNU and KNLA and devotedly fought.  The awards were given for 70 years, 50 years, 40 years and 25 years’ service.  Among them, were 6 leaders who joined the struggle since the KNU was formed in 1947.

 

Before the ceremony day, there were exhibitions on the history of the Karen National struggle, the peace process and its implementation and the administration structure of the KNU and KNLA. Traditional Karen Done dance groups and famous Karen and Myanmar singers performed to honour the 70th Anniversary of Karen Revolutionary Day.

It was estimated that over 10,000 people joined the ceremony including Karen people from inside Burma and around the world. The Chairman of the KNU led the ceremony and attendees included the KNU Executive Committee members, senior military leaders from the KNLA, senior leaders from other Karen armed groups of DKBA, KNU-KNLA, BGF, Karen CBOs, Karen SCOs, other Karen respective leaders, Christian and Buddhist religious leaders, Karen political parties, Karen ethnic leaders, ethnic armed alliance organisations leaders, ethnic armed groups leaders, including special invitees from the UN, EU, (Non-governmental organisations delegates from Joint Peace Fund, Euro-Burma Office, Central for Peace and Conflict Studies, Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, Norwegian People’s Aid, Thai-Burma Consortium and others organisations), special invitees from Thai Universities and Thai civil servants.
